Gorgeous LARGE 15kt Gold Locket with Vertical Floral Band, ca. 1880

WOW!  What a stunning piece.  Measuring 2.25" total length and 1.5" wide, this has incredible size.  Victorian gold lockets of this size are not commonly found and when they are, they are badly dented.  This one is practically mint.  With its warm rose gold hue, smooth surface, and central floral band, it is sweet yet has plenty of presence. Each side has a sort of shadow box construction in the center.  The front exhibits a trailing vine of flowers in this shadow box while the back is completely plain which gives the locket two very different looks.

The warm hue of the rose gold is breathtaking and soothing.  It perfectly matches many of the chains from this era.  If searching for a chain, contact us; and we will be happy to assist you in selecting the perfect one.

Having 15 karat gold content is rather unusual as most of the pieces from this period are 9kt.  It has silky smooth feeling and almost melts in your hand.

Lockets of this size can be worn on both a short and long chains depending on the woman's preference or desired look for that day.

Free of dents, dings, or issues.  Closes tightly and stays shut.

Victorian jewelry originated in England with the period from 1861-1885 known as The Grand Period. We specialize mostly in jewelry from this era.  It is bolder in construction as this time frame saw women’s roles transitioning.  A switch from dainty to bold construction was demanded due to women becoming more prevalent in business and demanding the right to vote.  This move to a bolder look and increased demand was also attributed to the middle class having more access to higher paying jobs and being able to emulate the wealthy.  Jewelry was used as a sign of a woman’s wealth and place in society; thus, the more jewelry a woman wore, the wealthier she appeared.  9kt gold became all the rage during this time as it was more affordable for the upper middle class, and it allowed them to denote their rising status in society.  The vast majority of gold jewelry found during this period is of this karat content.  Earrings, bangles, and chains were now being worn during the day and were no longer reserved for evening.  Women of this period were no different than women today; each enjoyed her own style and her pieces were special and significant to her.  Her personality emanated from her jewelry.
