WOW! What an incredible piece! Not only is the decoration one we have not seen but the form is also one we have not seen. Standing 6.5" high and measuring 5" in diameter, this is a larger piece with unbelievable decoration. A brown and white worm forming a spiral encircles the top portion of the canister while a row on cats' eyes encircle the lower portion. Chocolate brown bands create dividers between the decoration. It is possible these bands denoted a sort of measurement if this canister was used as a type of dry measure. The actually intended purpose was mostly like a canister of sorts.
Given the height and weighted bottom, this was most likely a recptacle for serving utensils. There is no evidence it would ever have had a lid. There is no interior rim for which it to sit nor any wear to the top where the lid would have rubbed.
Earthworm decorated pieces of yellow ware are scarce. In twenty plus years of specializing in yellowware, we have had only a handful. We have never seen this canister form with or without the decoration.
It has one area where the brown slip has smudged. Other than this blemish, there are no apologies at all. Absolutely pristine with no chips, cracks, or repairs.
The grooved, flared base creates a weighted base. This weighted base allows the canister to hold utensils without tipping. It is extremely substantial and stable.
