Unusual Yellowware Hen on Nest

Description:

Measuring 5" long and 4.75" high to tip of tail, this is a wonderfully quirky and different form.  Hen on nest pieces can be found in almost every ceramic category.  Yellow ware hen on nests are not commonly found and most are not very early.  This one dates to approximately 1930's.

Hen portion is a lid which readily removes from the nest to reveal an interesting hiding place.  Most of these were used to conceal eggs on the kitchen counter; however, this one is rather small for eggs. Perhaps this one was produced merely to be a novelty.

Exceptional brilliant yellow glaze on the hen is in sharp contrast to the deep dark chocolate glaze on the nest.  The bold colors and unusual nature of the form allow this to be an instant conversation piece and the highlight of any collection.
