Beautifully faceted jet beads compose this 15.5" Victorian necklace. Graduated beads are separated by 15 karat gold balls. Most likely a mourning piece as Jet was usually reserved for these pieces. Jet is a unique stone as it was formed by wood under extreme pressure, and it is usually only seen in Victorian pieces.

9kt gold became all the rage during this time as it was more affordable for the upper middle class, and it allowed them to denote their rising status in society. The vast majority of gold jewelry found during this period is of this karat content. Earrings, bangles, and chains were now being worn during the day and were no longer reserved for evening.
