Absolutely wonderful, brillliant yellow 15 karat gold locket with intricate engraving on both sides. Measuring 2" long x 1.5" wide, the entire locket is consumed with decoration. A vine of large leaves fills the outer band on both sides. Large middle portion is raised with the ivy border stepped down on both sides. Fern fronds, blank small shield, and forget-me-not flowers adorn one side of the locket while scrolling vines of leaves create the landscape on the other.
The combination of the intricacies of all the decoration and 15 karat gold solidify this as one of the best lockets we have had. Most lockets are not this brilliant in color nor this beautifully engraved. It is rare to find one of this high karat as most pieces are 9 karat. The engraving is etched in the gold and obviously hand done.
Leaves wrapping the outer border most likely represent ivy leaves meaning everlasting love. Interior forget-me-not flowers reaffirm the sentiment of love and adoration. Thus, this locket was no doubt given as a token of one's love.
A child's picture is still inserted into one half of the interior. Perhaps this was given when the child was born.

A switch from dainty to bold construction was demanded due to women becoming more prevalent in business and demanding the right to vote. This move to a bolder look and increased demand was also attributed to the middle class having more access to higher paying jobs and being able to emulate the wealthy. Jewelry was used as a sign of a woman’s wealth and place in society; thus, the more jewelry a woman wore, the wealthier she appeared.
9kt gold became all the rage during this time as it was more affordable for the upper middle class, and it allowed them to denote their rising status in society. The vast majority of gold jewelry found during this period is of this karat content. It is highly unusual to find pieces in this 15 karat. Earrings, bangles, and chains were now being worn during the day and were no longer reserved for evening. Women of this period were no different than women today; each enjoyed her own style and her pieces were special and significant to her. Her personality emanated from her jewelry.
