Exhbiting one of the most interesting patterns we have seen on a gold-filled locket, this buckle locket is highly unusual. We typically do not purchase gold-filled lockets but this was too "fun" to pass up. With its two exaggerated balls in vertical orientation in the center to create the illusion of a shirt cuff or buckle, this locket exudes Victorian era sentiment. Fern leaves form the engraved detail on the sides of front of the locket while forget-me-not flowers and associated leaves form the overall pattern on the back.
Buckle jewelry became popular in England during the mid-1800's after Queen Victoria received a buckle ring as an engagement ring from Prince Albert. Bangles, rings, and lockets can be found with not only the buckle motif but also the related shirt cuff. At times, the two are intertwined such as with this locket. It is difficult to discern if the creator was aiming to project a buckle or shirt cuff or perhaps both.
Measuring 1.25" wide x 2.25" long, the locket is a nice generous size in excellent condition. No major dents, dings, or issues. Shuts snugly and stays shut. Perfect for any length of chain. Excellent yellow gold coloration.
