Just Fabulous! Obtained from a lifetime collection, this is the only one we have ever seen. It was produced in England in the mid to late 1800's when ironstone makers were producing the Pure Butter and other dairy/grocer slabs. This is the first we have seen with an American shop's name which makes it even more special as these dairy/grocer pieces were typically not made for the American market.
Used to measure goods in a grocery store, this scale was hooked over a thick rope. This thick rope was connected in a pulley system to another plate which weights would be added in order to determine the weight of the item on the ironstone scale. A completely unique method of measuring items and unlike anything else we have seen in any form.
Wonderful John Chatillon and Sons mark on the bottom. This mark actually denotes a scale maker founded in 1835 in New York. It is the first piece to surface with this maker's name on such a scale.
