The grasses camouflage the round receptacles which would have held the pipes in the larger one and matches in the smaller. A small vertical grooved area on the back would have been used as the striker. Most likely European of origin, these smoking stands were certainly well designed to be able to incorporate all these needs in a graphically interesting piece.
